August 10, 2009—Continuing his attempt at a political makeover, Bob McDonnell today outside of Martinsville said, "I know theres been a lot of talk and Ive come down to say, it really is time for action."
In 2000, when McDonnell was a legislator in a position to take action, he stood against the workers in the area when textile plants shut down and left nearly 3,000 workers jobless. McDonnell voted against a bipartisan emergency relief package that would have enhanced jobless benefits with health insurance for the unemployed textile workers in Martinsville and the surrounding areas.
And even earlier this year McDonnell was all talk, no action, when he urged state legislators to oppose changes that would allow Virginia to accept $125 million in federal funds for Virginia's unemployed workers. The two Republican delegates who didn't follow his lead were Del. Don Merricks of Pittsylvania County and Del. Danny Marshall of Danville. Merricks voted yes, saying that when he looks at his constituents, "I don't see if they are wearing red or blue; I look them in the eye and see they're hurting." [Danville Register & Bee, 4/10/09]
