I bought a Genie H4000A-2 in 2007, which is a screw drive model, hoping it would be more reliable than the chain types. Well, this one failed yesterday. The one I got was the 3 piece rail type, which is the source of the problem. The screw drive sections are held together with these collars, and the collars are kept in place with crappy little retaining clips. Well, the retaining clip must have stuck out too far and got wedged in the screw drive. Then the carriage wouldn't slide past it. And it turns out the carriage is all chewed-up because of this issue. I tried to call the 800-354-3643, but the recording said they weren't taking calls and hung up.
@imsmiley4u Yeah, if the motor runs, that screw should be turning, for sure. Are you sure the whole screw is not turning? What about the part of the screw nearest the drive motor? If the whole screw is not turning, then it's not a "split shaft" issue, like I had. I'd take it down and remove the rail from the motor. There's a "collar" in there that might be messed-up. If you can test it while it's down, you could run the motor and see if the shaft exiting the motor was turning.

I have a Genie screw drive model also. I replaced the carriage because that's what i was told was wrong with it. THe old one looks no worse for wear than the new one but in inspecting it closer i see that the screw is not turning when i turn it on. How can I fix this problem? I can't afford a new closer riight now. Help?! I have a model ISL980...
