why dont you use counter or is it that in assasins creed 1 you cant?

You can't use the counter ability right now,you gain that ability later.

do you need to get to all the towers to go to damascus? cause i find it kinda confusing

No,but it's really helpful to get the map.

thanks for the quick reply, helpful how? there are these barriers saying "ancestor memory not accessable" will it clear those up?

Well,the view points reveal where the citizens are (the one that you need to save),the mission where you get the info and the bureau.

You can't do anything with the barriers,these will be unlock when you come back for another assassination.
