You could also pick up the cup, and take a sip, like people have done for thousands of years.

Believe it or not. But there are semi-handicapped people out there who lost their warm and cold senses. (dunno the medical English term) Since they can't feel what's cold or warm it would certainly be helpful for them.

He said that wasn't a serious example. It's just so people get the idea of what the technology does.

Or you could just go live in a cave you know, like people have done for thousands of years. This is clearly a gimmicky feature but it's more important than that, it's about taking the next step, improving technology, I'm happy people with a mind like yours are in the minority, or we'd still be using steam as a power source.

If they could get this tech small enough to be incorporated into a smart phone it could become practical for many business sectors. Electricians for one would find it useful for identifying hot components in switch boards, saving them having to rent out a very expensive thermal camera on the off chance there isn't anything wrong.

Time will tell, these guys are pretty damned clever at making stuff small :)

I think you're underestimating the flexibility of this sensor :)

It gives a range of temperature, so could be good for a variety of uses. I also won't pay $50 extra just for it, but it would be a nice addition to a cellphone at a later stage.
