i saw mantle once. in old comiskey, toward the end of the year. i was like 10 and it was a double header. mantle came out to pinch hit in his last at bat at comiskey. standing ovation, my older relatives were telling me to pay attention, mickey mantle was at the plate. i remember he batted left and made an out. we must have been on the 1st base side because i remember the 7 like it was yesterday.
@tomitstube Also I still have my 1963 Street and Smith Baseball year book which has Mantle on the cover. And I saved my clipping of the picture in the newspaper of Mickey at the plate and an arrow going from his bat to the top of the stadium where the ball struck at the very top of the facade when the Mick almost hit it on the roof batting left handed. A friend of mine was in Washington when Mickey hit the longest home run in his career. He was batting right handed. It was 1953.
@tomitstube Wow this brings back memories. Mickey was the last player with the Yankees to wear No. 7. I think when the Yankees began using numbers, they originally gave out the first 9 to the players in that game in their batting order and Ruth got 3 and Lou 4. So I would guess they were the ONLY players to wear 3&4. In the new book about Mick, Yankee outfielder Jack Reed (61-63) remembered Mick hitting a line drive at a shortstop so hard that it knocked him off his feet!!
this must be late in his career, his running looks labored. what a swing tho, i think it was maris who said mantle could swing the hardest while in control.

@braxtonantoine ~ forget all that, just think of what his numbers would have looked like if he had stayed healthy.
