A demo of Black Rose done at Ramport Studio 1/22/1978 featuring:

Phil Lynott (bass/vocals)
Gary Moore (guitar)
Scott Gorham (guitar)
Brian Downey (drums)

and a young...
Huey Lewis (harmonica)

Note the different lyrics and the extensive harmonica. Quite a neat thing to hear.

  • Thanks for all these demos!! As a life long Lizzy nut they are really interesting and enlightening view into their early ideas. Personally I think all the demo'd tracks I've heard were eventually improved for the final recordings and goes to show the value of firstly, working around your ideas and secondly, employing a great producer!! Top work, any more to share?

  • I actually do have some more, mostly from Phil's solo stuff. Not sure yet if I'm gonna post them.

  • i have a few hendrix outtakes, and its pretty different like this. Nice hearin these!

I didn't think Gary Moore was in lizzy in january

  • He actually wasn't. Gary had joined Lizzy on stage a few times in late '77 and was also in the first incarnation of the Greedies, which was in February '78. These tracks for the future Black Rose album come from the end of January and beginning of February in '78, so Moore probably just happened to be around and played on some of them. Incidently, a few never ended up on a Lizzy album; some went on Moore's 'Back on the Streets' album and Robertson used the song "Blackmail" in Wild Horses.

  • Gary played lead on the Black Rose album. But this isn't him and doesn't sound very good, I admit. A bit too slow, but I can't find a lot of fault with TL, they were "Lizzy". Can't dispute that.

  • If it's not him, then who is it? Other tracks were recorded on this date, and those definitely feature Moore's guitar. Several other people (with more knowledge than me) said Moore is playing on this, but lets just disregard all that and go with your complete shot in the dark, with no proof whatsoever to validate your claims. Sounds good to me...

  • Thanks for this. I have never heard it before. Mad stuff!

  • I was lucky to see, this line up,, ok it was 1978 or 79,, think it was 78, Stafford England, Lynott, Gorham, Moore, Downey, that was the line up, ive never forgot how good they were, they did Black Rose, i was in the middle so i had the sound either side, Gary Moore and Scott Gorham ,,,, was so so good, but even back then i remember Gary did the real tricky bits and even added to em,, nice memories

  • this is Gary Moore.
