Hill country rhythms. A drum beat builds as dancers, bedecked in sparkling costumes give in to the music, performing local dances which may mimic the movements of a snake or take them tumbling through the air.

Kandyan dance is the most famed art form of Sri Lanka. Passed down over the centuries through royal courts, the height of its patronage was the 16 th to 19 th centuries. Several styles of Kandyan dance exist, though the most renowned is Ves , performed with an elaborate silver costume composed of 64 ornaments.

Bursting with energy. Bold quick movements. Spinning and leaping through the air. Taken over by the rhythm but retaining precise sharp form. Kandyan dance is a must-see for most travellers to Sri Lanka.

At its heart, Kandyan dance is a sacred dance form. It was born from indigenous spiritual practice, and evolved over the centuries, incorporating facets of Hinduism and Buddhism. During the annual Perahera festival, dancers are a highlight of the procession, but Kandyan dance is performed year-round. Contact the resort staff during your stay for details on Kandyan dance performances.
