Horsemen the world over from Clinton Anderson to Pat Parelli owe a debt of gratitude to Australian horseman Kel Jeffery. His method of gentling and handling a horse is both a common sense approach, and one that combines the elements of feel, timing and balance in such a way that there is a great deal of communication possible.

This is simply a SMALL portion of my version of Mr. Jeffery's method. To truly understand his method, I would look up the video by Maurice Wright, which includes footage of Mr. Jeffery gentling a colt at age 75.

This video is not meant to be a complete, in depth representation of Mr. Jeffery's method, but rather an example of how I have interpretted them and put them to use.

This example is derived simply from my experiences handling horses using my own implementation of this technique. It is in no way intended to instruct anyone on Kel Jeffery's methods. The intention of this piece is simply to explain how I use them, and hopefully get some people to discover what this master horseman pioneered many years ago. Horse handling can be dangerous, and I in no way accept responsibility for the misuse of this technique. Please refer to people with greater experience than I, if you wish to further investigate this technique.

  • Wow....you are sooo cute! Normally I just concentrate on the horses in vids but I just kept focusing on this great Aussie look including the gumboots :-)

  • Thank you! Actually, those are not gum boots, they're just my Ariats and some half chaps. But I'm glad they brought a smile to your face. Viele danks!

  • very good :) you could be a twin to the guy who trained my horses...cept for the lack of aussie country accent lol. but u talk like him, repeat everything like he does eg. "make him go back make him go back make him go back' lol and yeah its all the same :) very nice to watch

  • As ugly as I am, I feel sorry for him then. LOL. Good horsemanship has a common thread really. And although to some the Jeffrey Method is odd, it actually makes a great deal of sense.

  • lol i didnt actually mean looks, but mannerisms and speech and stuff lol.

yeah thats what i think, i find if funny how all these people go around commenting vids saying such n such is crap and such n such is way better..when a lot of it is very similar...i just laugh at them

id actually never heard of jeffery till i came arcoss ur vids but ur take on it seems very similar to my trainer Steve's. im in Aus so that maybe is why but yeah i like u way cos its what he taught me :)

  • Kel Jeffrey was actually from Australia, hence your trainer Steve being keen on it. :n)

  • If there is one thing horses can remind us even more now the faster and faster paced the world is getting, it is patience. Go back to taking your time, listening whatever method you use with a horse it is about taking the time with each step to get it right and open your mind to try things. The horse will tell you if you are getting it right or if you are going too fast. Everyone can learn to slow down and relax, its a good thing.

  • yeah thats what i reckon :)

  • My guess is that it is because you touched her when you didn't have to. Pat talks, like many horsemen do, about recognizing the slightest change and rewarding the slightest try. If I present myself in a manner that makes my horse pay attention and look at me as if he needs to be aware of what I want, I'll release him. I'll build on the request from there. If he challenges, though, I'll increase the pressure from there. You might try my QTS3 - Leading a Horse on Float and see if that helps.

  • how do you get your horse to back out of your space like that.. i have been doing pat parellis 7 games but it isnt working very well.. she moves off pressure fine but as soon as i try to get her to back off without touching her she wont budge.
