U.S. Senator Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) spoke on the Senate floor to discuss her successful efforts with Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) to fight for small farmers in the Food Safety Modernization Act. The Tester-Hagan amendment protects small producers from excessive government regulations in the bill.
I also have great concern about senate bill 510 food safety modernization act.
That said, it sounds like the amendment is in the direction of protecting small farms. Honestly, I think we need to subsidize local food production because we need to move in that direction. And for heaven's sake, we don't need the government squashing them.
If anything, the amendment doesn't do enough. I still oppose the bill itself. Do whatever is needed for local farms to flourish.

Passage of this bill although it sounds good will eventually have dire effects on home gardens, farmer's markets and people who plant using hierloom seeds. A major sponsor of this bill is Monsanto. The feds will insist that f a state doesn't adopt a plan, they will enact laws that deal with anyone who grows with the intention of selling, bartering or giving away foods. Food banks will eventually also suffer.
