1999 Mercury Cougar V6 uncontrolled acceleration

Here is the strange problem that has plagued my car for a while now. I have replaced the IACV and TPS and it didn't fix it.

EDIT: I believe I found the problem. One of the bolts holding the EGR to the UIM was broken off, and was allowing a vacuum leak around the EGR where it wasn't sealed down tight. I've got a new UIM coming, and will update if that fixes my problem!

i thoughtthe check engine light was the one with the little fan? or is that a coolant light?

@bcott28 The CEL is the one with the engine shape. The one with the fan is the coolant level light. It is very sensitive, so many people just overfill their coolant tank by just a little bit and it keeps that light from coming on when going up and down hills, but doesn't harm the engine in any way.

Hy there, did you fix the problem?

It could be many things, maybe some sort of damage or dirt in the throttle body, maybe your throttle cable is jamming somewhere...

On what point did this start to happen?

My 1994 cougar does something similar, when i turn the car on, sometimes if i let it idle for a few mins the rpms will raise from about 7-800 to around 1900 and the check engine light will flash and when i put it in gear it goes back to normal and other times when im at a stop light the car will go down to about 4-500 rpms and chug like its going to die but when i accelerate it goes back to normal. any suggestions?

In my brothers intrepid r/t the trottle stayed open and we didnt no whats wrong so then we laid it the floor on the interstate and it quit so try and beat on it a bit

MY 98 ford cougar is the same almost when i drive mine its like the throttle cable is sticking but its not and it takes nearly a minute or 2 before it idles agin can u tell me wat was rong with ur car

I've Got a similar problem with my 1998 ford contour, it accelerates uncontrollably, and it wont shift (automatic), i`ve got two codes a p1120 and a p1125, i`ve already replaced the tps, and it still does what it was doing before

@azbobbybooshay10 thank u much sir! i just finished doin the fuel pump on mine outside in the driveway on ramps! not easy or fun but def doable. i got 99k on my car anythings other than fuel pump since i fixed it i should be concearned to look out for?
