5043 'Earl of Mount Edgecombe' - "The Red Rose" Brighouse

On Saturday 16th April 2011, Tyseley's flagship GWR Castle 4-6-0 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgecombe' (or to us notherners 'Earl o' Mount Edgecum') hauled a special, very rare appearence away from its usually territory over the Pennines - marketed as "The Red Rose" although the trip crossed both the red and white rose territories. The ourward leg of the tour began at Tyseley Warwick Road then went to Walsall, Wolverhampton, Stafford, Crewe, Eccles, Brighouse and then across the famous Copy Pit route before setting down at Blackburn. After a 2 hour stop in Blackburn the train retuned to Tyseley Warwick Road along a different route through Wigan.

With this being a very special occasion (and it going through somewhere close to where I live) I thought I'd go down and capture some footage. Brighouse was again packed out as usual! The opening shot is from an overbridge just outside Brighouse station and sees the Castle making abit of noice before shutting off ready to stop. Then after a quick run (yes run!) down to the station we see the support and footplate crew getting the engine ready for its assult of Copy Pit - including refilling with coal and breaking up the clinkering of the fire. After a clear "GET ON THE TRAIN NOW" whistle the engine makes a storming and sure-footed getaway from the station!

This is my first view of a Castle on the mainline (i don't have many holidays in the south!) and lets say I was impressed! Even without seeing the engine doing any hard work I could tell she would easily handle the banks!

This is my first video for a number of months due to other things (EXAMS!!) and will probably be my last for a while.

Nice Vid. I watched it emerge out of Standedge tunnel and rushed over to vid it passing Elland just after it left Brighouse.

Magic! That classic Castle "bark" as she pulled out of the station was unforgettable. Thank you.

But I still can't get used to a Castle with a double chimney. They were so elegant with singles...

From my point of view anything with externally visable polished brass and a gleaming green paint job is elegant! I suppose its just down to personal preference.

Great footage. I filmed this at Manchester's Miles Platting bank (footage yet to be uploaded), and at Brighouse also. Some of my Brighouse footage has been uploaded.

And yes, 5043 was superbly turned out. She was a credit to her crews and volunteers. She was storming all day too, and was taking climbs with ease. She always looked like she could give more too.

@LMSStanier Thanks, if only more GW engines would venture up here more often! I could tell she wasn't going to struggle much - the body language of the crew gave it away really!! A wonderful engine and credit to all the volunteers who turn out, prepare and organise such a trip.
