Were they really surprised that people wouldn't drive all the way downtown and pay for parking to shop at the same stores they could find at their local mall with free parking besides?

they could've built anything there, but they chose to build another fucking mall. winnipeg needs more malls like a hole in the head.

A surprise? No. Portage Place is really terrible.

The owners of this mall live in BC, never come here to see this pile of shit.
They don't care and it shows.

The reason why this whole idea failed is because suburbanism was at the forefront of developers minds, along with the city planners of the time. Polo Park and St. Vital were bustling, and homes were being built on the fringes of the city. Somehow, it was a doomed project with the wrong idea for the right reasons.
In order to have shoppers in Portage Place (and Eaton Place), you have to have people living in downtown first, and I mean A LOT!! It's the reason why Polo Park and St. Vital are busy.

Go Winnipeg! Former home of the Jets!

'The Bay and Eatons are now closed...' XP I'm so happy the Bay is still open, I love that store. I love the Paddlewheel. XD

A&B Sound closed down because the company went into recievership.
Umm... didn't anyone realize there was already a mall downtown - Eaton Place, which now, like Portage Place, has slowly been taken over by dollar stores and the like. Even Holt's is only Last Call now. Bye to Club Monaco, A&B Sound couldn't survive, even the Liquor Mart at cityplace has closed! Soon the downtown malls will be nothing but Giant Tiger's, Red Apple Clearance Centre, and the Bargain Shop! They're the only stores thriving downtown! So Sad... I think Winnipeg's downtown is cursed.
