Lead UND Flight Instructor, Mike Lents, teaches the Soft-Field Approach and Landing as outlined in the UND Aerospace Warrior Standardization Manual. Jennifer Poncelet sent in some great flying photos from a few flights in North Dakota and Ryan Carlson (the writer and narrator of the Spin Awareness Training episode) sent us a sign-off after a training flight in the UND Aerospace King Air. Keep on sending in those photos and sign-offs!

  • Was this just a demonstration or is landing in a grassy field actually apart of the flight training at UND?

  • @championonwheels Yes, actually. At UND our students utilize many satellite airports during their lessons to practice landings. Several of these airports have groomed grass strips where students will practice soft and short field techniques with their instructors. In fact, the runway that you saw in this movie is used all the time by our flight crews.

  • I stick bubble gum on the windscreen. One for soft flair and one for speed flair. Then its simple to judge the height above the strip...lol Yep, Keep It Simple Stupid! ( KISS)
