By propagating an infrared laser beam with a wavelength of 1030 nm through a BBO crystal (beta barium-borate) cut for second harmonic generation there is not only an observation of frequency doubling (i.e. green at 515 nm) but also a bluish glow at 480 nm when a phase mismatch is achieved. Welcome to the world of nonlinear optics!

Remark: The violet light on the left is a result of the infrared sensitivity of camera CCD and is not visible.

  • so this is a result of spontaneous parametric down-conversion right? so the BRIGHT LIGHT - those are quantum entangled photos??!! i so want a barium borate crystal ring!

  • Erm, isn't it a (frequency) up-conversion? So the green is definitely a frequency doubling from the infrared. And it's of course parametric. And I sure it's not stimulated, but is it then spontaneous?

    From my point of view the decisive question is: Where does the bluish light come from?
