Aurelia sets out on a quest to save her imprisoned children. Set in the imaginary country of Balnibarbi from the book "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift written nearly 300 years ago. A rebellion is under way against a harsh regime who have "Laputa", a flying island, which they use as air power against their population. Laputa retold in a present day setting relates remarkably to current events. In this retelling, Lem Gulliver and Jonathan Swift appear as journalists covering events for "BBA News".
Team MITCIT V48 Hours speed film-making competition NZ 2011. At 7pm, Fri 20 May we had our elements: Genre=Quest Movie. Prop=piece of bent wire. Character=Bobby Young, an ex-bully. Line="What have you got?". Shot=freeze frame. After an excellent day of filming on the Saturday we struggled on Sunday with 2 out of 3 of our editors out due to illness and accident. We were 1 minute late to the finishing line which means we still participate in the festival but out of the main competition. What you see here includes Scene 1 plus some "tweak" tidy-up changes. Scene 1 was edited into place on Sunday but failed to render so the audience was treated to 30 sec of a red screen with a computer error message - this felt like the longest 30 sec of my life! This was bizarre but fitting treatment of a 48 Hours live audience but would not make sense on Youtube. Some other small details to declare eg correcting the credits. This version preserves the brutal compromises we made to try to race for the finishing line. 2 x scenes are missing and other scenes appear as raw green screen performance edits without the computer artwork added. Therefore this is a fair reflection of an ambitious green screen movie, delivered against the odds in 48 Hours and 1 Minute. The complete "Version 2" is in production!
Elements: Aurelia's quest is personal, to save her kidnapped children, but in doing that she brings down the flying island and brings about the end of the regime. Bobby Young is a regime henchman who changes sides when his son is caught and killed in the fighting. The wire is in a child's toy that Aurelia is carrying as a keepsake - it turns out to be vital for picking the security lock on the Laputa control mechanism. The line - "What have you got?" - is in an important missing scene that you will see in version 2!
It's not a good idea to do green screening in a 48hour movie. Instead of working on the 2D and 3D effects you should have worked on the story. Really bad!
