Update: For a month I replied to all points raised in comments and there have been some really useful and considered discussions. The overwhelming majority of new comments raise issues that have already been discussed and I may not reply. Please check that the comment you're making has not already been made. I will respond to genuinely new input.

Just in case anyone believes the rubbish in CGPGrey's excellent video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhyYgnhhKFw I've pointed out where he's wrong. The real problem with royalty is of course the idea that someone is born superior to the rest of us. That belief allows an English culture of privilege and social division to persist.

Thanks to cgpgrey for his discussions and being a good sport.

  • Yes he may be wrong (although it is entirely possible that you are wrong and he is right), but it doesn't mean you have to go all Great and Powerful Trixie on his ass and be so annoyingly patronising.

  • @Petriedish02 thanks for watching and sorry you thought I was so annoying. I realise I overdid a bit but I tried to respond in the same style as the original and having talked with cgpgrey about it I know he didn't mind at all. I'm not sure I agree about being patronising, I'm well aware that cgpgrey is far far better than me at videos, this was just something I did to learn. All the best, Tom.

  • 5:36 it isn't French, it's St Michael's Mount, Penzance, Cornwall, ENGLAND. Although Mont. St. Michael and St. Michael's Mount look very similar and Mont. St. Michael translates into St. Michael's Mount, that is St. Michael's mount

  • @danAWESOMEcollier you might want to tell cgpgrey since even he admits he made a mistake in the original video and put a picture of the French one up instead of the English one.

More seriously, one of my biggest regrets in life was not realising earlier that many people appear confident in their position because their arrogance fools others. I have checked this many times, I am almost certain you're wrong, but I accept you might not be.

  • @Orestisc yeah, I think I overdid the sarcasm, but I was trying to respond in the same spirit as the original. The negative votes don't bother me, the majority like it and those who don't were at least not indifferent. Thanks for watching and for the comment.

  • Sucks to be you, living in Theocracy ruled by useless Fatcats who costs 40 millions a year. Greetings from Germany.

  • Really Great

  • The logic is the land on earth that the Queen thinks she owns, is really not hers. Maybe we are living in different centuries...The so-called "revenue" is supposed to belong to the people. As to the celebrity, or anyone in that matter, sure can pass on their money to their children, and by the way, they don't live off of the tax dollars like the royalty do.

  • @dragonrides What about all the celebrity children that just inherit all their money? By your logic no parents should be able to give money to their children because that increases the rich-poor divide.

  • Thanks for rebutting the original video... in principle someone can live a high life because he or she was born into royalty is wrong, no matter how you explain the "true" cost of it based on the very little information one can find on internet. What's scary is people still thinks this out-dated model is acceptable, therefore continue to pay for their lifestyle by paying your hard-EARNED money.

I like the CPGREY's previous video, but this original one was rubbish I have to say.

  • you talk slow

  • I watched this because I could not stomach the original without noting a few of the objections you raise here. That was well done, thank you for rebutting the untrue or misleading segments from the original.

  • @IAmCaptainMarvel That's true and I won't disagree with it, but it doesn't make the quote any less valid. Do as I say, not as I do, and all that. All men being created equal can still be a valid goal even if the person saying it is bad at doing it himself.

  • @danAWESOMEcollier 5:36 The island is indeed Mont St Michel in France, NOT St Michael's Mount in Cornwall. Similar, but not the same.
