Why I said ASL failed and what I meant by the statement. Carrying the 7th generation "deaf family" label I witnessed and observed four generations of deaf people and their so-called communities. I can safely vouch the important fact that ASL lacks structural values necessary for our own defense and how it seem to disintegrate (a process that decomposes) deaf people's vocabulary and grammatical skills. The video has been subtitled for hearing people so that they will begin to understand the underlying issues within our deaf community.

  • It is clear that you take pride in having 'good' English, as it is not the norm among the Deaf community. I want to point out that you are correct in another comment that ASL is NOT the native language for each and every deaf individual. You stated that ASL (in your opinion) carries frequent misunderstanding in the ASL community. Is this not the same for all of the spoken language? English has too many homonyms (one of many examples); does this mean English failed the ASL language?

  • @hoovwho No. Pride has nothing to do with this. It's all about the economic power associated with English language. Your standard of living and finances depends on your English literacy. This is why there are so many deaf trashes in our deaf community. And yet they complain about their lives, blaming the world for oppression and discrimination, failing to realize why. They misunderstand each other on daily basis. If one really measured, ASL is the most misunderstood language.

  • I appreciate your frankness in this vlog but what really churns my stomach is the title itself. The title itself could have been worded better. I was thinking, if hearing folks just had a deaf baby came across to this vlog and see your title, they quickly think, "Oh, our doctor was right, ASL will make our kids stupid." Will the hearing folks TAKE THE TIME to watch your vlog and understand that your plea to the deaf community is to find the balance between using ASL & English?

  • @redvioletsandpurpler I do understand your concerns. Will the hearing folks take the time to watch this video? I don't know. But kindly explain how this particular video might be worse than many of the stupid vlogs that are generated at DVTV and DeafCube web sites? If you were hearing and you wanted to know what a deaf community looked like you just need to look at these web sites. I'm only one of many vloggers and you're worried about my videos? Have you said anything to other vloggers?

  • ASL failed what? The English language? Of course, because ASL is not a code manual for English. The earlier a deaf child is exposed to language(s), the more likely he/she will have established language. The real problem is not ASL itself, but the education/communication system taken place at schools and homes. I've met so many intelligent Deaf people who are fluent in ASL. Blame ASL? Or blame the educational system?

  • @hoovwho Nope. Don't twist what I meant. Nice try on your part. Or perhaps you are the proof of how ASL failed because you misunderstood the underlying point I made. Think about it.

  • Well done. I second to that since you're right on the money.

  • Thank you Barry. Well said and I agreed with you. But it doesn't apply to everyone. It needs to be fix!

  • Hey man! I agree some of it but you cant blame on people since we have different sign language and also hearing people have different accent and I am sure they misunderstood them just like us and WE ARE NOT PERFECT! there should not be judgement on others! Deaf accent and Hearing accent are the same problems! but we cant change them!

  • One thing is I forgot about deaf church members in general. I've been noticed all of them never read the Bible often and keep sinning old sins over and over. I am already tired to fix all old problems between them. All deaf people must read and write often!

  • I saw the first 'ASL failed" Vlog, and I almost didnt needed to see this one because I completely understand and agree with you, but I went ahead and watched this vlog because I like your vlogs very much. Well said, Barry. Keep it up.
