i dont know who taught you shotokan karate... im a shodan in it and im testing for my nidan.. and we dont focus on "sport karate" or point fighting.. "the ultimate aim in karate lies not in victory nor defeat. But in the perfection of the character of its participants" if you were taught traditional shotokan karate-do, then you'd understand this saying and see that (a good shotokan school) teaches the philosophical aspect as well as physical..

and thank you for the answeres :)

@kenseisato1989 Yes, they are. Shotokan as it is done today is done for sport! The original manner was as a complete system using elbows, knees, throws etc. The bunkai of its kata reveals a complete different way of fighting than is taught today. Even the language of karate reveals a spirit that is not shown today like the "suicide technique". Thanks for the question.

Empi? Unsu? are those katas?
-
@kenseisato1989 You are correct. One of my teachers is Shihan Errol Bennet. As one of the best students of Master Oshima (the highest ranking black belt of Funakoshi he always said Shotokan done right is a complete system that can go up against any style. In Empi is a body throw, in Unsu ground techniques. Most though don't study Bunkai!! Sad!

iv'e done different styles of karate for a year, mainly shotokan and kyokushin.
and on top of that tae kwon do for 3 years.
currently training in muay thai under the TBA for 3 years
both are great but if you wanna last long in the sport you have to train smart.
don't be a yahoo and go all out every single practice session

the real deal of shoto kan right here....
had a complete system, throws, striking, foot work, take downs...
shit man i can only say that the older the martial arts get the more washed up/evolve they become

Seeing old shotokan History makes me realize what are style represents. It has so much history behind even in tournament style. It so cool to see historic footage of Karateka.
