The "Mario" series has a generally nonsensical and abstract nature, so people accept when Mario characters go to the desert / space / etc. in the Mario Party series because it fits.
The "Sonic" series, however, has a more serious (or at least, has been since 1998) nature-- therefore, it would be unfitting for Sonic characters to go to abstract locations.

What did half of Mario Party's minigames have to do with Mario? They all had random stuff happening on the maps too. Didn't hear any complaining about them.
