  • Hey Paul, you mention that the JKA changed the foot transition near the end between Kokutsu and zenkutsu. I've been out of mainstream shotokan for a while so that's interesting. If you don't move your front foot you have to move your back one right? To transition from a heels in line stance to a shoulder width one. Is that right?

  • @bertthepickle Neither feet move, you just thrust forwards into an "inline" zenkutsu. The rationale behind this is that there is no need for a strong hip twist as the movement is simply a grab and requires no strong thrusting power from that the full hip movement would provide

  • @taffypaul right. ok, thanks. Following on, do you guys only see in bunkai that double hand grab as a grab and not a thrust?

  • @bertthepickle just been told that that's the way it's supposed to be done in our tournaments and grading. I believe we use Nakayama's best karate books as our standard. Application is generally left to personal interpretation.

  • @taffypaul ok. Thanks for the reply Paul. Your performance is certainly really really sharp! I just find it interesting the differences associations put in the 'same' kata in the same styles. Often for, it seems, arbitrary reasons.

  • nice kata and good Tempo & good performance .... and very good power in the techniques and powerful stops in each one...Train hard it seems that you know what are you doing and divide your training session between karate and Fitness

  • Paul, I love your advanced data videos, but can't figure out why you execute the heians so quickly. Where does this come from?

  • super
