Heard Sinatra's take 20 years ago, in my 20's. Love.
Ms. Simone's version brought to me a different meaning to the lyric. Her tremulous, broken vibrato, her sense of time, her sublime phrasing and dynamics, made me realize the imminent mortality of the lyric, that not to think of spring was best because it would not be seen again; that to get along without a singular love was intolerable, impossible,
"Should I phone....once more."
Once more.

Nina Simone was an amazing stylist. When she sung a song it was hers and the song became something new and haunting. Everytime I hear this song, even when it takes me to a sad place, I revel in it. It gives you permission to feel and justifies it. And then when the song is over...you let it go and feel better. She does that. That is art. That is why she stands alone.
