Significant fragments of "Alligator"
(e.g. the post-vocals "jam section")
known to hail from a show at
San Francisco's Carousel Ballroom on 2/14/68.
Also the "Alligator" vocal reprise is taken
from 11/10/67 at the Shine Exposition Center.

  • I hate to say it to committed DeadHeads, because this phase of their genius was way early in their career-1966-1967.....but this is the non-C&W-Driving that Train, totally laid back, etc.-extaordinarily virtuosic Jerry Garcia et allllllllllllllll

it goes nuclear at 3:22 in or so, with a total acid-filled percussion jam, Garcia coming back with guitar at 5:29, and then climaxing(at 6:09) as the entire weight of the DEAD came crashing down........on top of and around Jerry...!

  • I love the complexity and instrumentation of this track. The repeating guitar riffs just in the background, the overlapping vocals, the unspeakably irritating kazoo that just sneaks in now and then, the piano coming in to say hi, the tribal intensity of the drum solo, the vibraslap, Pigpens gravely voice, it's all good!!!!
