April 22, 2009
Today is Earth Day across the planet and Kiwanis Park is NOT FOR SALE!
The City of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada is considering declaring surplus and selling for housing development 24 of 30 acres of table land at Kiwanis Park, thats 80% of the land that doesnt flood! The Friends of Kiwanis Park, through their stewardship made a clear statement to the City of Kitchener that this land, all 115 acres of it, is NOT FOR SALE! Park supporters showed up in record numbers, approximately 100 children, youth, adults and seniors, for the annual Clean up Day on April 19, 2009. Supporters fanned out over the upper fields, the forest, the flood plain meadows and along the 1.5 kilometers of river frontage to pick up litter and debris that has collected over the winter.
It was a day of celebration! Hard work, hotdogs on the grill and cake! Community came together to celebrate Kiwanis Park, our pride in protecting this gem and the 93rd Birthday of Mr. J. E. Kaufman, Chair Emeritus of Friends of Kiwanis Park. Mr. Kaufman is the nephew of A.R. Kaufman the illustrious Kitchenerite who shared the vision of creating and maintaining a natural park for the City of Kitchener with the Kiwanis Club more than 40 years ago. A.R. Kaufman and the Kiwanis Club exhibited long sightedness and went green long before green was politically correct. They didnt just talk about a great idea, they made it happen. They created and maintained one of the most beautiful municipal parks in the Province of Ontario where the focus has always been on nature, children and families. A picnic park. Natural. Simple. Green.
The park now stands pristine and precious ready to leaf into green! Thank you to all of our supporters.
We invite you to help us convince the City of Kitchener that bulldozing a park, laying asphalt, digging in sewers and building a subdivision on top of Kiwanis Park, a natural haven for people, plants and wildlife is not quite what the rest of the world is talking about when they talk about going green!
We are Canadian. We are proud of our parks. We will preserve and protect them now for the future!
