Cuban guitarist Leo Brouwer plays his transcriptions of 12 keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti in a magnificent (and long out-of-print) 1974 recording.

For this recording, Brouwer played a guitar built in 1973 by Daniel Friedrich (Paris).

Please don't ask for the score -- I don't have it. It can be found at Gendai Guitar (Japan) or at Guitar Solo Publications (San Francisco, CA); both are on the internet.

  • love love another scarlatti!

  • Very expressive and clear. Leo Brower is a clear sound lover.

However, more passion, at the expense of clarity, would give it another dynamic.

Let us not forget that Scarlatti loved Spanish folk music.

  • I think the tempo is a little on the slow side, but I like it (backwards trills or not). Listening to this proves to me that it's better to hear all the voices clearly than have a forced, rushed feeling that sounds almost mechanical like so many of the other versions on YT.

  • Domenico Scarlatti played by maestro Leo Brouwer is the most beautifil music!

    Long live Leo Brouwer!

  • Wow, I never knew Brouwer was such a stickler for the cross-string trills. It fits with the keyboard sound though so I am a fan.

  • I lvoe this !

  • Thanks for posting, there's something about these sonata's...

  • @ninebreaker21 I thought the same thing.
