POSTED WITH PERMISSION OF DON ROSS. Recorded at Trinity United Church in Cannington (Ontario, Canada) on Saturday, September 15, 2001. Tuning: FACFCF

David Essig's comments on this tune:

"I wrote the piece to honour the memory of my mother, Doris Hinkins, who came from the small town of Berkley Springs, West Virginia. I originally wrote it in DADGAD and recorded it that way on the first album I issued as a CD in 1988: Morning Calm. That's where Don Ross first encountered it I believe. He may have also heard me play it live, since we used to do some gigs together back in Ontario and at some Canadian festivals.

Don transposed the piece into F tuning which enables him to play some interesting chord inversions. He also added a chord to the piece that's not in the original, but which I've now incorporated into my version as a tribute back to Don."

  • Hey ColinCashin or anyone else who might be listening... where did you find the transcription for this song? help would be appreciated.

  • donrossonline "dot" com

  • best guitar piece ive found on youtube.

guitarmusic1- have you ever heard essig's version? is this much different from his

  • Yes, I've heard Essig's original and it is different. Some people prefer Essig's original but I personally prefer Don's arrangement (but probably because I heard it first). David posted some comments on the tommyemmanuel "dot" com forum after a user there posted a link to this YouTube vid. He talks about his original and Don's version. Due to character limitations in the comments box, I've placed David's comments in the "About This Video" section at the upper right of this page.

  • man what a song my favorite by Don Ross I think because its so simple with such an overpowering melody. My only complaint is the set up of the amp or something around there area making that high pitch waaaaa sound throughout the whole song, apparently he sets it up like that? But for what reason if someone could shed some light would be great, oh well best EVER SONG!

  • The audio quality is because I used a camcorder in the church balcony with its built-in condensor mic. This vid was originally shot only for my own use, this was pre-YouTube days.
