Why not play Qf5? If he captures, you get a passed pawn which is easily reinforced by g4, while if he doesn't capture you've avoided the queen trade.

why not queen to g8?

after you initially bring your rook to H1...what's wrong with black playing Kg7. The rook can be brought into action and there's no check on the king. it just seems like a stronger move but i'm bad at in depth analysis.

I've been in whites position many times and probrably would have drawn that game with no real material advantage. But I'll look for that play in the future.
