JOHN SCOFIELD, considered along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell, to be one of the three greatest jazz guitarists at this time, John Scofield, (Dayton, Ohio, USA, 1951), is known for his modern interpretations, his extraordinary capacity for improvisation and his ability to compose songs that are sharp, rhythmic, and extremely danceable. His sound, with its roots firmly in rock and soul, is influenced by early Chuck Berry, Albert King and B.B. King. As a teenager, he began to play rock and roll, urban blues and rhythm and blues. Between 1982 and 1985 he accompanied Miles Davis and since then has preferred to lead his own groups, although this has not stopped him working together with Gary Burton, John Abercrombie, Larry Coryell, Bennie Wallace, Peter Erskine, Hal Galper, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Bill Stewart and Brad Mehldau, amongst other, as well as recording with Charlie Mingus and Chet Baker. His discography is as extensive as it is great and among his more than 30 albums, perhaps the most outstanding are Still warm (86), Loud Jazz (87), Hand Jive (93) and Oh! (03), in the company of Joe Lovano, Dave Holland and Al Foster. Last September he brought out This meets that, which includes, amongst other tracks, a version of "(I can't get no) Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones. The Malaga concert of THE JOHN SCOFIELD TRIO plus HORNS - "This Meets That", features: JOHN SCOFIELD -- guitar, STEVE SWALLOW -- bass, BILL STEWART -- drums, PHIL GRENADIER -- trumpet and flugelhorn, EDDIE SALKIN -- tenor sax, flute and clarinet, FRANK VACIN -- baritone sax and clarinet. • Scofield's so good, he bends the entire guitar along with the string...?

  • I listened to Langrene trio. A real cook house! I however must point out that Scofield, Methaney, and frizzel are perhaps the most imitated jazz guitar players of our time. To me originality is the highest form of art. Also the most difficult. Think of it.

  • great

  • Takin' notes....

  • He melted that one!

  • @lugk14 I think that claim is pretty old really, just carried over into the past couple decades from like the 80's. those guys are post "the big three"

  • pete mccan is very underated also wayne krantz

  • he have the most creative style

  • I think Rosenwinkel can be added to that list but probably not many other guys...yet. "The Next Step" really changed everything, many players are just working from that at the moment, both tonally and conceptually.

But when you talk about Scofield, Metheny and Frisell their reputation is based on the consistency of projects and clear individual voices. Kurt could be seen as hit and miss still with his projects.

  • "at this time one of the three best guitarist"...so what about Kurt Rosenwinkel. Lage lund. Mike Moreno: Jonathan Kreisberg. Adam Roger etc.etc.etc.

  • Then he plays left handed,.... brilliant!
