Gohan was SSJ2, but Toei forgot to add or too lazy to add the electricity around their aura or body.

you can see the electricity gone a few times during the fight with Perfect Cell too.

in the manga, he was clearly a SSJ2.

he only got 1 hair strain, not two. that mean SSJ2.

@dbgtFO But in the end, it doesn't really matter. Although I would like to know what Toriyama was thinking, when making those chapters, we already have a retcon/clarification in the 7th Daizenshuu, so there really isn't any debate to be had anymore. Just fans, who hold on to their strict "Manga above all Policy" or who believe it was a mistake, because a prior Daizenshuu implied that he didn't use SSJ 2 after the tournament, even though later statements always hold more value, than the first.

@dbgtFO Story-wise there's more evidence going for Gohan being SSJ 2. Before the fight, Kaioshin thinks the Saiyans are confident, because they can just go SSJ 2, if needed. During the fight, Gohan is losing and noone even considers that he could just go SSJ 2 to win and way after the fight, Kaioshin says multiple times that Gohan is far more incredible than what they first thought, which doesn't make sense, if his power was only = SSJ. Toriyama definetly set up a weird scenario IMHO.

@FireDavio42 That is pretty straight-forward, since we have two guidebooks confirming that he could and nothing in the manga contradicting that line of thought. In fact the manga supports it, so that's just fans either hating on Vegeta for no apparent reason or something else.

@JackHamsterNoodles I think it's because the thought of Toriyama intending Gohan as a SSJ 2 in that fight, while not drawing him with lightning which every SSJ 2 before and after him and even himself at the tournament had is very unlikely. And people usually argue that either the Daizenshuus are not canon or that they made a mistake. It's pretty unlikely they made a mistake though, because they say Dabra is equal to Cell and that Gohan fought evenly with him, which SSJ Gohan can't do.
