'Area: Blurring the Lines' is an exhibition of the installation work of 5 Bay Area sculptors. We were each invited to spend a week at the Cal State Sacramento, University Library Gallery and with the help of students from the sculpture department do whatever we wished. In response to the recently opened Sokiku Naktani Tea Room in the same building, I created a Kinetic Tea Room. The "Tea Cups" are made of elliptical mirrors rotating and casting bowl shaped shadows. Polishing the gray paint off the back of mirrors revealed a layer the color of red clay paint. The ovals of reflected light cycle across the space to the viewer and return to their source. The "Silver Horizon" is the water container, the "Chabana Wisk" brushes kissing makes the sound of the wisk stirring the tea, shhh... the table top is painted with red clay slip and the golden brush slowly removes it layer by layer, and the Thangka of Good Heart has a flicker bulb at its center, a spark floating on air for all that enter.
Beautiful! I wish I could have been there to experience this installation fully.
