Once a week I feed my guppies their favorite food: live daphnia. I grow the daphnia in an old goldfish bowl I keep by a window, but out of direct sunlight. It's filled with algae and the daphnia grow quickly. So quickly, in fact, that if I do not regularly harvest them, the population crashes and almost all of them die. So feeding a selection of the adults to the guppies is best for both populations.

Oddly enough I actually bought my starter culture off eBay. Many pet shops/online stores will sell you a starter culture. Then all you have to do is keep them in a place which is reasonably warm and well lit.

  • hello, i was wondering where to get daphnia. thx
