In response to the questions about which element to remove: He does say to use the earpiece, but if you watch him pick up the receiver, it looks more like he takes out the mouthpiece. Around :42 or :43 he tilts the receiver, and you can briefly spot the hole where the cord comes out, which is located at the talking end. Worse to worst, try it both ways, but I'd be inclined to start with the mic end first.
This is sweet nice work! I've just bought my phone to make one, just got a bit confused though, do I use the part you hear people speaking or the part you speak into? Also, did you use a mono or stereo jack socket? Cheers!

For those asking he said use the top piece that you listen through on the phone.
Bloody brilliant! I like the sound. Not real fat (on a video with computer speakers anyway) but screams nicely.
But the phone....it doesn't go to 11!
