This is my first solo 'jazz' piece I wrote in high school after buying some modern jazz records by Miles Davis and Bill Evans. Recorded on a Story & Clark studio piano with an AKG microphone that hung down by the cable from a wooden beam in my sister's and brother-in-law's garage in Pasadena, CA.
The pictures are from my sister's collection from the late '20's to mid - 30's, mostly taken by my grandfather. He developed them all in his darkroom. In my last year of high school he taught me how to develop B&W prints. It was a cool hobby - I played Bach Brandenburg Concertos by Pablo Casals and the Marlboro Festival Orchestra (along with Laura Nyro's 'Gonna Take A Miracle' album) on my reel-to-reel tape deck (the same Sony deck I recorded this tune on) over and over while getting into photography. TMI I know! The abrupt ending is because the tape ran out, I believe. The 'echo' effect on the piano comes from tweaking the 'SOS', or sound-on-sound knob that was on the back of the tape deck. Interesting feature!
It is a beautiful piece. Recording on the reel to reel brings back memories for me. Although I cannot say I miss it. ; ) As far as TMI, I always enjoy the settings you place your music to. Thanks again John for another glimpse into your world.
