The yearly live telecasts of Gian Carlo Menottis Amahl and the Night Visitorswere a cherished Christmas tradition throughout the 1950s. In addition, since its premiere in 1951, Amahl has been performed regularly by community groups and small opera companies throughout the US, making it the single most popular American opera.
This production, staged by the composer himself and originally telecast on Christmas Day, 1955, is a testament to the works enduring power to move the heart and stir the soul. Starring Rosemary Kuhlmann as the Mother and Bill McIver as Amahl. Members of the Symphony of the Air are under the direction of Thomas Schippers.
Also on the DVD, from the same broadcast, is The Columbus Boychoir performing Christmas carols.
The DVD also includes an exclusive 2007 interview with Rosemary Kuhlmann, who played the Mother in the premiere and all the subsequent telecasts.

  • @bravaLiz He was my choral director in college and he had a beautiful voice. It was incredible to hear him sing.

  • William McIver was my choral director at UNC-G in the early 1970's. We would all sit mesmerized when he sang musical passages. What a shame that he is gone. RIP

  • Have seen many professional versions of 'Amahl" (for years I loved the 70's version broadcast that featured the beautiful and talented Teresa Stratus) but from a vocal standpoint, Kuhlmann's technique is pristine, and I don't believe I've ever heard a more perfect boy soprano doing this. Wonder what he sounded like when he grew up??? ,
