  • @RabidKoala That's true, producing the Corvair was expensive for Chevy because it shared so few parts with other cars. Nader actually gave us a few extra years of the car because Chevy didn't want to look like they were caving in to him.

  • @steffidude

As much as I despise Nader, the competition killed the Corvair. Competition within Chevrolet, the Chevy II and the Camaro. Competition from outside, the Mustang. Nader was just flattering himself, he had little to do with it.

  • 'cont--

In fact, the concensus really is what killed off the Corvair was the increased popularity of the Ponycar/Musclecar. Cars like the Camaro were selling like hotcakes, and were a more straightforward and easier to produce model. Buyers also had a choice of a Nova for a small car. So the Corvair, which dwindled in sales numbers but was not "killed off", ceased production as GM focused on Camaro and what the car buying public wanted for 1970. Case closed.

  • History lesson guys. Nader's book never killed the Corvair. The Wikipedia entry on the Nader matter is particularly foolish.

Nader had trouble with the "swing axle" design of the 1960-1963 Corvairs. His book was published in 1965, after Chevrolet had changed the design. (For the record, he complained about flashy dashboards too). The swing axle design, ahem, was also used by Porsche and VW. The Corvair continued production through 1969, hardly "killed off by Ralph Nader".

  • Hilarious. The Lakewood Wagon barely got any air at 1:28 so they cut to a faked shot of the driver during the "jump". If that had been a '62 Monza Wagon with a 4 speed, it would've gotton up enough speed to get some nice air.

  • The Corvair Lakewood station wagen was the car in which Ernie Kovacs died when he skidded into a CA utilty pole in January of 1962.

  • actually Ralph Nader was spot on but the Corvair is still a cool car ;-)

  • I love the wagonstoo, but I have a 65 convertible.

  • we're actually working on getting one right now!
