Many violent battles were fought here in or near the Tempi Gorge. The Persian King Xerxes,in 480 BC, avoided the Greeks that were blocking thevalley and managed to find his way around the gorge by traveling from Leptokaria, over Karia and Gonoi, only to meet the Greeks later on in yet another famous narrow passway at Thermopylae (where the same thing happened, as you well remember). King Alexander the Great in 336 BC took the oute over the Kissafos mountain to avoid the Valley.

The Tempi valley is actually an enourmous gorge in the same category as the Vikos Gorge near Konitsa in Epirus or the Samaria Gorge in Crete. It separates the Olymp mountains from the Kissafos or Ossa and is one of the most beautifull places in Greece and it is located only 10 km from Nei Pori.
It is some 6 km long and at it's narrowest just 30 meters wide, wile the cliffs rise up to 300 meters.
