The story so far:
Yumi Fukuzawa, a naive girl from a middle class background is accepted at Lillian Girls' Academy, a school typically for rich girls.
At Lillian the girls are instructed how to become traditional submissive Japanese housewives to the rich and powerful. This art is a subtle one, so subtle that each second year student is expected to take a first year student under her wing and mentor her one on one. The first year student must yield to her mentor (or Mistress/Dominate) in all things. While the first year student is expected to do everything imaginable for her Mistress, she is to expect nothing in return.
Yumi is chosen by second year student Sachiko Ogasawara, one of the richest, most glamorous, and most desired girls in the school. At first she makes Yumi (who is somewhat of a slacker) miserable with her strict ways. But, Yumi is eventually able to break through Sachiko's icy exterior and develops a warm relationship with her. Yumi was able to do this by performing a fertility dance that made Sachiko laugh.
Sachiko is one of the three Student Council leaders, so Yumi has to do most of the boring work for the council as a Student Council assistant as well as handling her own work.
By the end of the first year, the first year students are expected to attend a formal ball where they are to demonstrate proper manners, poise and spontaneity. Those who demonstrate sufficient skill in their craft are given permission to become a mentor in the next year. Those who pass are also given the privilege of being treated as an equal by their mentors, and having their mentors be allowed to do things for them.
Unlike her fellow assistants Shimako Tōdō, and Yoshino Shimazu, Yumi has failed at two formal balls so far.
Yumi has a younger brother named Yuki. Yuki attends the boy's school that is associated with Lillian. Although Yuki is younger than Yumi, Yuki is in the same grade as Yumi because their birthdays (some eleven months apart) just fell in the same school year. Yuki has just completed an arduous first year where he performed as a Student Council assistant. Yuki also had to bear the unusual burden of having to dress in drag while at school. This is a tradition for his school's Student Council. (Aren't their any high schools in Japan for rich student that don't have Student Councils with weird traditions?)
During Yuki's tenure as an assistant, the senior advisor to the Student Council, Suguru Kashiwagi, won Yuki from Yuki's mentor in a video game bet. This was somewhat uncomfortable for Yuki because Kashiwagi is going to be married to Sachiko in the future in an arranged marriage and Yuki originally felt that Kashiwagi was only interested in him because he could spy on Sachiko through Yumi. However, Kashiwagi was able to prove that he was interested in Yuki for who he was, not who he knew. And, besides, Kashiwagi has a really cool car.
Will Yumi be able to pass her test and become equals with Sachiko? I'm sure Maria-sama would enjoy watching that.
