The 1992 US Open was one of the best major championships I've seen. After 3 days of relatively calm conditions, Pebble Beach showed its teeth in a Sunday bloodbath. 27 players started the final round within 5 shots of the lead. 17 of these players ended up shooting 80 or worse.
I'll never forget the action at the famous 7th hole. It played just 112 yards (102 metres) but no one knew what to do. Only one player in the last 15 groups was able to hit the green in regulation.
Apologies for the quality (my VHS tape was almost 20 years old) but these clips from the final round show just how tough it was. There's a focus on the 7th hole with the likes of Nick Faldo, Mark Brooks, Ian Woosnam and Gil Morgan watching their hopes go down the drain. The commentary says it all.
Tom Kite ended up winning the 1992 US Open with an amazing final round of 72. He finished 2 shots clear of Jeff Sluman with Colin Montgomerie (who finished more than 3 hours ahead of Kite) a further shot back.
I finally got the chance to play the hole myself in 2011 and you can check that out in a separate Youtube video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tyiwVXgDAw
I can't believe this is going to be 20 years ago ina few months, I remember Kite just holing everything and winning it in some style! Boy it was tough that last day but I was glad for Kite.....just showing me age now!
