Plot:
GREAT DIRECTORS, directed by Angela Ismailos, features original, in-depth conversations with nine of the world's greatest living directors: Bernardo Bertolucci, David Lynch, Liliana Cavani, Stephen Frears, Agnes Varda, Ken Loach, Todd Haynes, Catherine Breillat, Richard Linklater and John Sayles. The film documents Ismailos' voyage of discovering the creative personalities behind the camera. She explores the filmmakers' artistic evolution and personal identity, the role of politics and history on their work, and the agony and dilemmas in the creative process. It also examines the challenges of being an artist in an age of commercialism and globalization. The film traces the influence of cinematic movements and iconic directors on these directors' work-from the role of Neo-Realism in Bertolucci's evolution to the influence of Federico Fellini on David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman on Catherine Breillat and Rainer Werner Fassbinder on Todd Haynes.

  • @eckosama You don't know David Lynch? Don't even compare him with Peter Jackson. And don't forget Kubrick, the ultimate, perfect director.

  • no wes anderson?

  • @in5secs Peter Jackson's awesome

  • JOHN SAYLES! YAY!!!

  • @Ynnadodgers actually I haven't thought of that, but I think back and I can agree completely.... That would be interesting to see thru Kubrick's eyes. I'm sure Speilberg didn't do it, cuz he knows ppl expect a family movie from him. He said himself however that Kubrick was supposed to direct the movie had he not passed away. At least Speilberg finished the task, however lacking the final outcome may have been.

  • @eckosama I think what was done wrong was Jude Law's character and the possible trip we are about to take into this seedy artificial sexual underground... It just kind of goes ignored though. Speilberg doesn't really touch on those things so I'm wondering what Kubrick had intended for that element that never came to fruition.

  • @Ynnadodgers o ok. ya I should watch more Kubrick. I wanted to see the shining. I see odyssey it was great, so I gotta say Kubrick is a good director. What I wanted to say was that AI wasnt rlly ruined by Speilberg cuz he didn't change the storyline. The part when the kid sees his mom again was written by Kubrick, which I see as a sign of his hopefulness, something not apparrent in his films. He characters are usually nihilistic u know. speilberg didn't ruinit, it wasnt ruined kubrik wrote it.

  • @eckosama I like AI somewhat, but if you watch the rest of Kubrick's films you can see what was his influence and what Speilberg did wrong with the film. If this is your opinion of Kubrick only by watching his clips, you really need to do yourself the favor and dive in to his all of his films. You'll love life a lot more...

  • Who is to say what defines a great film? in the end, for me its all about escapeism.. take for instance Jurassic Park "an unrealistic blockbuster" some might say.. i think it's great.. i love blockbusters (not ALL, like Pocahonta..Aatar* for instance) but people are different.. some like snobby art films about random stuff, provoking people, and searcingh for "meaning" but if that's youre cup of tea. just don't think youre better than everyone els because you like to over analyze movies..

  • I wonder if everyone commenting on this page is eating cheese and crackers with a glass of red wine??
