Here is a rare recording of Shawn Lane playing a live guitar solo, and a keyboard solo by Billy Batte, with the band Savage Innocence (which was a re-working of Black Oak Arkansas), back in about 1980/81, with Shawn at the age of just 17.

Here are another couple of similar Live solos Shawn & Billy played at other shows around that same time :

As often happens with very early Audio recordings of early Shawn that have been passed around from cassette to cassette many times over the years, the copy of this i received was sped up.... so i spent a number of hours trying to restore it back to the original speed, based around the relative pitch, using other recordings/videos of Shawn playing the same solo (from different gigs) as a guide for pitch and speed. I'm now happy this is restored back to the correct original pitch/speed.

  • Wow-he came a long way between the virtuosic chaos of the earlier solo from about a year before with BOA-his lines sound so much more musical and organized here. It's great to get to hear the development of his incredible talent.

  • @Gregorypeckory Yeah that's what i always thought... big difference in just that short amount of time.

  • is there a name for that song when the band kicks in?

  • There probably is, i've been meaning to find that out for a while.... they'd often play that back then during instrumental sections.

  • You know, when Yngwie came in, everyone acted like music had never had more than a bar of 32nd notes played consistently at a moderate tempo on any instrument, but here is shawn lane, at 17, playing way way ahead of his time, yet who got the recognition? Al Di meola was doing the same thing, even way back in 1976, and then there was also John Mclaughlin. And compoers have been writing technically demanding things for 100s of years. In any case, Shawn is the best guitarist who ever lived period.

  • @ 1:41 u hear that famous lick that paul gilbert adopted and got him his chops.

  • @baddoggo lol that's awesome

  • I was at this show, I think? Poets Music Hall, Menphis Tn. This show was hot. I met the drummers brother and he gave me Jims phone number. I called him about doing a show at one of our regional concerts in PB Mo. He was like, how did you get my number, Ha! Very nice guy though.

  • @tmh1717 PAUL GILBERT WAS GREATLY INSPIRED BY THIS SOLO.

  • Haha. Slash huh...I guess I just think its a poor opinion, which you are completely entitled to. It's poor to me, but I do respect it.

You say you won't waste your time debating and yet you state it as a fact. First of all I've seen both Holdsworth live and Lane + Hellborg live. Second of all I am a musician and I still think Allan has the edge even though I respect both of them very much. It's not a fact it's a matter of opinion. They are both very impressive. To say that Lane is better than Slash is a fact because they are on completely different levels.
