What you were supposed to do in the chicken room was to wait for one of the chickens to lay an egg, then use all of the ingredients in the chest to bake a cake, letting you jump up on the half-step. Remember, you can't swim.

BTW, the clue was the sign that talked about the fish. You were supposed to catch a fish and cook it in the furnace, activating the door.
