It honestly looks scary as Hell going up something that appears to have no ceiling. Safety would be an important issue and constant monitoring from top to bottom for weather/wind changes would have to be established. A decade later still making the same assumption with very little advances in concept. Its still over blown and pretentious. Simplicity isn't going to push this project any further. Maybe carbon nanotubes, but thats still yet to pass any test in the real world market.
lets see the belt will be 100,000,000m long and 1m wide, assuming that it weights no more then a standard sheet of paper(i.e 100g/m^2) would bring it's total weight to 10,000,000kg.
the cheapest way to get things into GTO(we actually need HEO) costs 11,000$/kg i.e it will cast 110 billion dollars just to get it up there.
