Final class project for a second level introductory Chinese course taken at the University of Miami in Spring 2011. Please forgive my rather poor Chinese. Perhaps the greatest hindrance to my learning Chinese is the tonal nature of the language. Nevertheless, this is an introductory class, and, with practice and dedication, I intend to improve my Chinese language skills.

SCENE 1

[A young man, Tan Junming, is sitting at a desk in front of a computer, surrounded by papers and books. He thinks to himself . . . ]

*Tan Junming*
I have so much work to do. Besides this analysis, I also have to finish this project to complete my Geography degree. In addition, I must practice my Chinese language. I love learning to speak and write Chinese, but it is so hard, and I usually do not have free time to study the new vocabulary, preview the grammar, and listen to the audio recordings.

[Suddenly, the phone rings; his mother is calling . . . ]

*Tan Junming*
Hello.

*Mother*
Hi, Tan Junming. It is your mother. How are you?

*Tan Junming*
Hi Mom. I'm well, and you?

*Mother*
I'm fine. How's work? Why don't you call your mother?

*Tan Junming*
I am sorry for not calling. Work is fine, but I'm so busy and tired.

*Mother*
I'm sad because we never talk. But don't worry about it; I know you are very busy these days. Try to sleep. I called to ask you a question: What is the date today?

*Tan Junming*
You called me to ask what date it is?!

*Mother*
Yes. Please tell me: what is the date today?

*Tan Junming*
Today is Sunday, September 4. And if you also do not know which year it is, it is 2011.

*Mother*
Very good. And could you also tell me what day comes after September 4?

*Tan Junming*
Right! I am so sorry! Its father's birthday tomorrow, right?

*Mother*
Yes. So will you be coming home tomorrow to celebrate with a big dinner and your father's favorite French wine?

*Tan Junming*
Yes; of course. Because my brain is so tired, I didn't remember.

*Mother*
I know, I know. Don't worry about it. Just be there tomorrow and eat dinner with your family. Try to be there at 7:00pm. How does that sound?

*Tan Junming*
All right. I'll see father, you, and sister tomorrow.

SCENE 2

[Leaving his house later that day, Tan Junming is on a mission. He thinks to himself . . . ]

*Tan Junming*
I must go buy my father a good gift for his birthday. But I do not want to drive today. I do not like driving. Driving in the city is so slow and boring. I like to walk or ride my bike. Today I will ride my bike to the train station and take the train to the clothing store.

SCENE 3

[At the train station, Tan Junming realizes something and thinks to himself . . . ]

*Tan Junming*
Wait! I don't need to ride the train! There is a very good clothing store near this train station.

SCENE 4

[At a clothing store, Tan Junming looks for a gift to buy his father and thinks to himself . . . ]

*Tan Junming*
I think my father will like this watch. It is very beautiful, but it is also so expensive! I must find a gift for father that is not too expensive, but also not too inexpensive.I think he'll like this shirt. He likes the color blue and size medium is suitable. What is the price? . . . $59.95, about $60.00. These pants also look good. I think size 32 is
suitable for him. What is the price of these pants? . . . $79.97, or about $80.00. The shirt and the pants together is about $140.00. I hope he likes the gifts and has a
happy birthday!
