@pherbst502 - Yes sir, I have looked up and studied the history regarding said uboat. From what I have studied the uboat DID in fact sink a collier the day before. what was in question though was rather did they receive the transmission about the surrender. That we may never know. What I do wish to state though towards the man saying derogatory stuff about the dead it should still be looked at as they died horribly and I do not feel they deserved it or not.

@architectdesigner11 Submarines didn't carry the 88mm.

@panther224 Actually the U-Boat in question (U-853) sank a collier on 5th May 1945, the day before she was sunk. Since you claim to have looked up the history I would assume you knew that. It is highly unlikely this submarine was trying to surrender.

@architectdesigner11- I find your comments to be extremely insulting to those who lost their lives. People like you make me sick. I honor my forefathers (Americans) who died in wars past but these men were not "nazis" as you say they were. If you look up the history of this u-boat it was sunk in 1945 at the end of the war. I would not be suprised if they were trying to surrender. You know how people say to try living in their shoes? You ignorant fuck.

Since anti semetism reared its ugly head and what was not part of this conversation, then I suggest you shut up. What the hell does the Afrika Corps have to do with the Kreigsmarine? You need professional help kiddo.
-
I have not heard of that. It was official policy not to take on board surving crew members , since there was limited space and food on board the subs. Many times the sub would surface and finish off the ships with their naval mounted 88 guns . Assisting the enemy was not part of the mission.
Watch the movie Das BOOT - A german war film about a sub crew and even they showed the sub backing off from assisting stranded merchant men.

Then enlighten me as to the noble and glorious virtues of the nazis including those sub crew members whose mission was to sink and destroy all allied shipping. I am all ears as to your benovolence and sympathetic nazi tendancies. I am sure those crew members did not have Plato and the bible interjected with their naval training manuels before they started firing their torpedoes

Much rather be a simple patriot than a sophisticated traitor :)

FYI, Those subs and their crews nearly won WW2 IN 1942. If it were not for the heroic allied naval crews serving on the Convoys, the Battle of the Atlantic would have been lost. The reason why that sub is there because the Allies won WW2 - GOT IT YOU IDIOT. How about honouring all those allied naval crews who are sitting on the bottom of the ocean , instead of feeling sorry for your nazi friends.
-
I do not or ever will respect Nazis. You can join them since you feel so sorry for them sinking allied ships and their brave heroic crews.
The wreck is located off Block Island, Rhode Island - max depth about 125 feet.
