We train to call in arty, naval guns, mortars, in addition to AC130 call for fire, close air support (i.e., bombs, rockets, etc from fixed and rotary wing) and the like. On the higher level, you help to deconflict fires to help stay away from blue on blue incidents and from shooting your own planes out of the sky.

Do you just call in naval and artillery or do you call in aircraft like helicopters and bombers?

Hey there. I don't know what the combat engineer job entails, but you'd do well to dig someone up who does know. As for 0861, I loved doing it. It's a fast-paced, highly technical job where you're out with the grunts most times on deployments. Plus, who doesn't like blowing shit up? My old Sgt told us a long time ago that he went to re-up and asked his dad (SgtMaj ret.) which job was the next best to being a grunt without the BS. His dad told him 0861. Any questions, please ask!

I know Marines are assigned their MOS's, but while in the DEP you can choose an OccFld...is there anything I can do that can help me actually get 0861?

Unfortunately not. It seems to all work out based on the needs of the Marine Corps. While I was DEP'd in, I picked CK - Fire Support Man, which had a wide range of Artillery related jobs. I managed to get 0861 based on needs of the Marine Corps (0861 was critical needs) and possibly from having a high GT score. Good luck!

@Wolf2131 What was your GT score? If you don't mind me asking, and if you remember, haha

@hnxkam
132 GT. Probably could have scored higher if I studied for it. :P

@Wolf2131 3 months later and yet i have another question...what kind of math is good to know if you end up as an 0861?

@hnxkam
No worries, man. I'm here for any help you may need.
Having good math skill in general is definitely a huge asset. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, working with decimals and fractions, quick conversions in metric distances, being able to quickly estimate numbers and distances, etc. My advice? Be all around solid. You won't be solving calculus equations, but you need to be really snappy with the basic stuff including decimals and fractions.
