FAA released audio tapes of US Marine Corps F/A-18D jet crash near San Diego California. This audio recording has been edited to meet upload requirements and dead-air removed.
Also perhaps the pilot was a little pressured to descend prematurely, since the controller suggested he do so and asked him multiple times if he wanted to. Maybe if he hadn't descended so soon, he would have made it.
There's an latimes article (won't le me link it) says he turned towards the good engine, which is opposite from what should be done, so it took him much longer to make the turn. The article also says the officers at Miramar didn't take note when the pilot reported low fuel.
@qpalmer6 bet it was his squadrons big wigs who made that call..i am a militarty atc personnel and usually see this type of passover where the big wigs call the shots rather than the pilot....the pilot in an emergency situation will request what ever his squadron advises.
There are a numerous factors that none of us know about. I'm in the military and get to work with the air traffic controllers, and understood some of the meaning in this recording. They repeated the weather conditions several times to the pilot, so that was a big factor. He choose what was best/possible to do in his disabled aircraft. If you listen, the controllers say the aircraft went down west of the runway. The pilots don't send out "maydays", he only needs to talk to ATC.
im kinda confused... why did he pass up an opportunity to land at north island to go to miramar??? and what happened to the plane? i was expecting to hear a mayday call or something
I Blame to Boeing for this Bullshit, instead of build the F-18 Super Hornet, he should have helped to Northrop Grumman to heep the F-14 TOMCAT alive.
