Here are a few reasons why..
#1 Imagine being able to harness the power from lightning? Albeit the power form a single bolt isn't alot in terms of power distribution, but if you could capture several bolts..
#2 Imagine a lightning proof power grid. No more power outages during lightning storms..
#3 Imagine having the ability to know when and where lightning will strike..
These are just some of the reasons "why." There are MANY others reasons too!

My question is why? Natural lightning should be enough to satisfy us without making it happen. What's next, a blender that can assemble jigsaw puzzles? Some things are not meant to be. Do something useful like find a cure for AIDS.
