Unlike the newer single-action revolvers, the originals had no safety and needed to be carried with only 5 rounds, and the hammer down on the empty chamber. There is a trick to doing that so you don't have to point the gun at yourself while you search for the empty chamber. This video shows you how to do it. In this case the revolver is my old model Single-Six with a 5.5" barrel, in .22 LR. It also works with old model Blackhawks, Colt Single Action Army and clones, Remington 1875 and 1890, and most other sixguns that load through a gate on the right side and lack a safety.
The best safety is between your eyes; these revolvers are simpler, have fewer moving parts and therefore less to go wrong, and are every bit as safe as the modern guns, as long as you do your part and operate it properly.
