Johnny Benson crashes vehicle at Berlin Raceway

MARNE, Mich. (WOOD) - NASCAR driver and Grand Rapids native Johnny Benson is in serious condition at Spectrum Hospital after crashing his ISMA supermodified car at Berlin Raceway Saturday night.

Spectrum Hospital tells 24 Hour News 8 that Benson is in serious at the hospital but "is expected to be fine".

Berlin Raceway officials say that #21 Johnny Benson and other racers were just coming around to take their second lap when Benson got into a wreck in turns 3 & 4 with #92 Larry Lehnert. This resulted in a crash, causing Benson's car to catch on fire.

Benson was extracted from the vehicle and the fire was quickly extinguished. Racing was delayed about an hour as crews cleaned up the track. Larry Lehnert was not hurt in the crash.
