@huckstered i NEVER SAID THAT YOUNG WAS THE ANSWER TO ALL THAT AILED DETROIT, but I don't think he was the worst mayor. My top picks for the worst are: Cobo and Kilpatrick. And anyone who thinks that removing the streetcar system was a good idea is a moron.

@ChicagoJoe57 Detroit is more contaminated than Chic. but only barely. Natl. Geographic 1979 shows the relative degrees of contam. Zug isle in Det. was the dirtiest spot on earth but has since been eclipsed. Downtown Chicago wipes the floor with Detroit it is beautiful. The Det. -Chic. corridor was the most contaminated area on earth.

@ChicagoJoe57 Hey Joe! These big cities of the northeast are extremely polluted envronmentally. Yes they are unequalled in many ways, industrial and financial centers of power. But, ever been to San Antonio,tx? Fresh air , sunshine and wide open spaces -a clean, warm place to live.
-
YEah right - Detroit is cleaner than Chicago. WHo needs to read?
-
@ChicagoJoe57 Young was no good,
Detroit is horrible, Chicago is a mess too.

To the author of this video: I respect your photography work. I just wanted to point out to you why it is important for Chicago to keep expanding it's rail system. One big reason: you don't want Chicago to end up like Detroit. What would Chicago be today if they had had Mayor Cobo instead of Mayor Daley? A disaster for sure.
-
But, hey, that is okay, you have Greektown and the casinos, you don't need nightlife in Detroit because no one goes there. So what that the city closes down at 5:00pm. Good people should be home with their families at that time, unlike NYC and Chicago.
Maybe if I read a book or two, I can be cool on youtube and write in all caps too.

"IN THE AUTO CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, NO ONE USED MASS TRANSIT, TOO MANY CARS "
That was your great forward thinking Mayor Cobo, who set Detroit up for failure due to his lack of project planning for the city's future. The destroying of the DSR was the single-most biggest mistake ever made by a mayor in the City of Detroit.
I still remember it being around Redford, and it was the Rouge. There was a big article in teh FreePress about how the rouge was one of the world's most polluted rivers.
-
are your drunk or smoking crack? that wasnt in redford it was in westland, and it was not the rouge water. what is rat fever? COLEMAN AKA KRUGGERAND YOUNG IS ON THE SAME LEVEL AS KWAME, THEY BOTH PILFERED THE CITY COFFERS AND RAPED MY HOMETOWN OF DETROIT, COLEMAN YOUNG BOUGHT SOUTH AFRICAN GOLD TO PAD HIS POCKETS, AND STEAL FROM THE CITYS FUNDS, IN THE AUTO CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, NO ONE USED MASS TRANSIT, TOO MANY CARS
-
That is why the guy who fell into the Rouge in Redford TWP in the 1980s died 2 weeks later of rat fever, remember that?
The two worst mayors Detroit ever had was Mayor Cobo and Kwami Kilpatrick. Mayor cobo is the genius who removed Detroit's streetcars and trolley buses, 1955 thru 1962, and replaced them with freeways. Now Detroit is the largest city with zero rapid transit. Coleman Young at least tried to revive mass transit in the city.
I use to live near the Fairlane area. Even though that river is filthy, that waterfall erased the reality from your mind. I use to enjoy visiting the Henry Ford area.

Yeah, they had mentioned on the tour that the Fords' private boathouse had to be closed and its river access blocked off in the early 60's because of all the pollution. Pity. It's a beautiful estate.
