President Benigno S. Aquino III became the eighth Chief Executive of the Philippines to be conferred a Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, by Fordham University in ceremonies held at the Rose Hill Campus in Bronx, New York.

Following a Fordham tradition, the President's name is carved on the steps of the "Terrace of the Presidents" in front of Keating Hall where he now joins over thirty (30) world leaders conferred an honorary degree by the university. President Aquino's name is carved beside that of his mother, former President Corazon Aquino who was bestowed with the same honor on September 21, 1986.

In his speech during the ceremony, President Aquino said that the task he faced upon assuming the presidency is to renew the country's institutions in order "to strengthen the principle of a nation of laws and not merely the whims of men; where the population not only abides by the law, but insists on its implementation."

He added that after a decade of political turbulence, the Philippines had entered an era of renewed stability and confidence. "The Filipino people have truly discovered that power is theirs: that the People Power that faced down tanks and artillery, truncheons and teargas, can be the dynamo for progress and the lasting mortar for a government that applies its laws fairly," President Aquino emphasized.

President Aquino also had the opportunity to meet the Filipino students and members of the Fordham University Philippine American Club (FUPAC) and had a group photograph with them.

Founded in 1841, Fordham is the Jesuit University of New York which has close ties with the people of the Philippines and has a sister Jesuit institution, the Ateneo de Manila University where the President is an alumnus.
